A Tribute to Johnny "Red" Kerr

A few hours before the Bulls paid tribute to Johnny ‘‘Red’’ Kerr on Tuesday night during halftime of the game with the Detroit Pistons, a couple of cynical sorts on sports talk radio were speculating whether both Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen would show up.

What the radio hosts didn’t understand was the effect Kerr has had on everyone he has met during his more than four decades with the organization as its first coach, a broadcaster and general goodwill ambassador. ‘‘For me to come back here and honor him,’’ Jordan said before the ceremony, ‘‘they didn’t have to ask me twice.’’

The Bulls wore their red road uniforms in honor of Kerr and countless clips of him as a player (at Illinois and in the NBA with the Syracuse Nats) and broadcaster were shown on the United Center scoreboard during stoppages in play throughout the game.

The halftime tribute ran long, lasting at least a half hour, but no one was complaining.

With the ailing Kerr (who is battling prostate cancer) sitting courtside in a makeshift wheelchair — a regular one isn’t designed for the frame of a former center — the program began with a proclamation from Mayor Daley declaring Tuesday as Johnny ‘‘Red’’ Kerr appreciation day and was followed by a video message from NBA commissioner David Stern.

The first live speaker was former NBA legend Dolph Schayes, who was a teammate of Kerr’s. Illinois native and Phoenix Suns founder Jerry Colangelo presented Kerr with the John W. BunnLifetime Achievement Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame and Jordan and Pippen paid their respects with comments about what Kerr meant to them. Before the game, there was speculation he might not be well enough to attend, but the UC crowd first caught a glimpse of him in a suite during the first half and let out a loud ovation.

‘‘For him to battle all that and come out and give us a chance to say goodbye, say hello — just reminisce,’’ Jordan said outside the suite during the first half. ‘‘He may not even feel good today, but he’s gonna come.

That’s why I came. I owed him that and the fans owe him that. He made many people smile for many years.’’

One of those people was President Obama, who taped a video message that was played toward the end of the ceremony. The final speaker — besides Kerr and his son, Matt — was Bulls general manager John Paxson, who presented him with a glass-enclosed photo collection and unveiled the bust (from the waist up) of Kerr that will be displayed on the UC’s main concourse.

‘‘He’s deserved that for a long time,’’ said Jordan, whose statue stands outside Gate 4. ‘‘He should have probably been out there before me. He started it all.’’

Matt Kerr spoke for his father at the end of the ceremony, thanking everyone for the tribute. But despite his voice being weak, Red Kerr grabbed the microphone to say a few words.

He called Tuesday ‘‘the happiest day of his life’’ — a fact, no doubt, enhanced by the Bulls’ stunning 107-102 comeback win — and also said: ‘‘You’ll see me here on occasion. What I miss most of all is this hardwood floor at the United Center.’’

Beforehand Jordan paid Kerr the ultimate tribune. ‘‘Johnny is the face of the franchise,’’ he said. ‘‘You could say Michael Jordan, you could say Jerry Sloan, you could say a lot of people. To me, it’s Johnny ‘‘Red’’ Kerr.’’

Although the tribute was emotional, Jordan provided a light moment when he went over and clapped his hands as chalk dust fell on Kerr — just like before games.

‘‘I don’t know how it started,’’ Jordan said. ‘‘I think he had a nice suit on and I wanted to mess him up a little. It became a pregame ritual.

‘‘Now LeBron [James] has taken it to another level. You see LeBron do it, I think of Johnny way back when.’’

Bobcats' Michael Jordan admits to errors

Michael Jordan's résumé as an executive has been tarnished by the name Kwame Brown, his much-maligned choice with the first pick in the 2001 draft when he ran the Washington Wizards.

This year, Jordan has to live with another failed decision: ex-Gonzaga standout Adam Morrison, the first player Jordan drafted for the Charlotte Bobcats. After not meeting expectations, Morrison — the third player drafted in 2006 — and guard Shannon Brown were traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday for ex-Sonics forward Vladimir Radmanovic.

In a rare conference call with media Tuesday, Hall of Fame player Jordan owned up to the mistakes but insisted some other moves he has made as managing partner of the Bobcats have positioned the struggling franchise to compete later.

The 20-31 Bobcats, coached by Larry Brown, have made three trades and used a league-high 23 players. Forward Morrison, 24, who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, averaged 4.5 points on 36 percent shooting for Charlotte this season and didn't fit Brown's system.

"Coming off an injury last year, he seemed to have lost his confidence a little bit," Jordan said of Morrison. "He didn't have the understanding of how Larry expected him to play, both offensively and defensively."\

The Ghost of Michael Jordan Past

Kobe Bryant went Kobe and dropped 61 on the Knicks and looked like the ghost of Michael Jordan past just 6 points better. Kobe now owns the record for the most points scored in Madison Square Garden breaking the old record set by Michael Jordan which was 55 Points.

The final damage was Los Angeles Lakers 126 vs. New York Knicks 117.

The Lakers play the Raptors tonight, lets see how close to 81 points Bryant can get with Jay Triano as the coach. Sam Mitchell is praying for Bryant to drop 82 I’m sure.

Dude is a monster!

Holmes Wants to "Be Like Lebron"

At the end of Super Bowl XLIII Santonio Holmes sealed the Cardinals fate with an amazing catch in triple coverage giving the Steelers an improbable 27-23 lead with just 35 seconds left. After the game winning touchdown, Holmes celebrated with a LeBron James style chalk clap!

Santonio Holmes went to Ohio State, and I’m sure next time he’s back in Ohio these guys will sit around and share a good laugh about this touchdown celebration.

Congratulations Pittsburgh!

Air Jordan VI Infrared Sample

This Air Jordan VI Infrared Sample created buzz on the net back when the first Retro Infrareds dropped in 2000. Most people weren’t feeling them back then. Many Jordan Heads felt JB “butchered a classic". Fast forward, nearly ten years later and Jordan truly gave us a “butchered a classic", the 2008 Olympic Air Jordan VI's... That shoe is a mess. Check out this pair of Sample Infrareds that recently hit Ebay.

Judging by the current price of just over $5,000 people must have gotten over that "butchered classic" issue they had before. Looking at the shoe it’s a very simple variation from the originals. Only the midsole was changed and the NIKE AIR was switched from Black to Infrared. This would make a really dope future release for Jordan Brand.

Thanks NiceKicks & EBAY user "gilou7" for the pictures.

K1X “Baller in the House” Shirt

There have been way too many streetwear brands trying to catapult to fame with Barack Obama T-shirts this past year. K1X is not in this group, because unlike the bulk of the Barack T’s, this one is pretty dope!

The Washington Wizards logo lends a little inspiration as well as Barack’s logo he used on the campaign trail.

Hopefully Barack's trip from Chicago to Washinton goes a little better then Mike's.

Forget Mike, Be Like Obama!

I just wanted to take today's post to congratulate Barrack Obama. You gotta love a guy that used to rock Nike Air's and the #23 on his basketball jersey way before Mike made it cool, and now he's running our country... Congratulations homie!

It's crazy how similar Mike and Barrack look in these 2 pictures from there High School Basketball days in the late 70's.

Wear Your Kicks

A lesson to all sneaker collectors via "RayRay3Thousand" of Nike Talk.

Enjoy-

I know people have posted war stories like this before, but as a school teacher, I feel that everyone should learn from others mistakes.

The other day at school one of my students asked me what was my most favorite pair of shoes that I own. I replied "spacejam xi's".

I went on to tell him the story of how they were our senior year hooping shoe in 2001, how they came out during the movie "SpaceJam", limited run, taught them the definition of an "icy sole", basically all the basic info of the Jordan XI, etc... he then asked me to wear a pair to school.

So this morning I get ready for work, open the box up, vvvvvvvnds SpaceJam XI's which I wore once or twice tops, lace em up and head to work.

Period one - "Nice Kicks", "Whooa, are those the ones?"

Period Two- I notice my feet start to hurt a little.

Period Three- Man, these are not feeling right. (I own many many pairs of XIs)

Lunch- As I walk up the stairs I feel a lifting on my toe.

Period Four- trying to teach a class while in the back of my mind I cant help but worry that my SpaceJams are gonna de-laminate mid step.

Period Five- Sitting in my classroom, in disbelief that this is the result....

Lesson to my youngsters:

Hype all you want over a pair of shoes. If you don't plan on wearing them, you are only fooling yourself. Its cool to keep a pair of kicks on ice for a little while, but keeping a pair of shoes on ice for pure bragging purposes, or just for the self reassurance that you have "shoe game", or that you're a "sneaker head" is just stupid.

WEAR YOUR KICKS & ENJOY THEM!

RIP SPACEJAM XI's ON ICE SINCE 2001.

Thank NikeTalk Member "rayray3thousand" for the story.

Air Jordan 2009 Black/Varsity Red-White

After seeing the first colorway of the Air Jordan 2009, we finally get a look at the classic Chi-town colorway.

The Air Jordan 2009 Black/Varsity Red-White colorway may turn some of you non believers onto this shoe because it definitely has a more classic Jordan feel to it.

Jason Mayden’s design efforts really stand out on this colorway, especially the fencing inspired side panel. The white offset on the heel area makes it easier to see the potential for player exclusives as well.

Thank NiceKicks and Sole-Locker info.
